AI: Useful Tool or Dangerous Gimmick?

As this year is starting to wind down, I've been doing a little reading into Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the potential dangers it may pose to modern education 🤖🤔.

This morning I read an article in yesterday's Irish Times, which reports that the ChatGPT chatbot not only passed a full Leaving Cert English exam, but achieved an astonishing 77% (H3). For context this is a high enough grade to go on and study English at any Irish University and only 11% short of doing so on a scholarship! 🎓

I've encountered a few students, particularly, when completing English homework for school, who have used ChatGPT to produce flawless, interesting and coherent work 🌟📝. Whilst this is definitely creative and intuitive, this serves no purpose to their educational development other than to satisfy homework-heavy teachers 🙅‍♂️.

I'm not going to ward people off using AI at school as it is the future, and just because it's new and scary doesn't mean it should be ignored. I would advise caution however, as I can see how some low achieving students could allow it to take over from them at school 💡📚

Use it wisely as a tool for guidance and inspiration, but don't let it replace your own effort and originality! 🤖🚫📝
